I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give our team a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be there promptly to resolve the problem.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important possessions close to the leak, and wipe up any water or place a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps as well.
